Hurricane Katrina was the worse natural disaster in America's history and once again Americans are opening their hearts and pocket books to those in need. Unfortunately, the scam artist are also once again at work. There are a few ways you can protect yourself from these individuals.
*don't respond to e-mails or phone calls from individuals claiming to represent any of the charities-they are not.
*go directly to the charity site of your choice. Do not use any third party links. (Why I don't have links here.)
*many of the individuals are very good at mimicking reputable charity sites. If in doubt, don't use!
*most charities have local chapters, use them as your contact.
*donate to charities you recognize. It is impossible to list all the good charities out there, but here are a few-- American Red Cross Salvation Army Habitat for Humanity Catholic Charities and other religious organizations. Check with your church, synagogue or mosque. Humane Society Bush Clinton Katrina Fund
The Katrina victims will need our support for a long time. Please consider volunteering at local shelters, churches, schools, and organizations e.g. United Way, Boy's Club that are offering programs and counseling to the victims.
The Katrina victims are in our prayers and thoughts.
