When planting trees always keep them at least 25 feet away from the house. Trees planted too close can clog your rain gutters with leaves, have branches that can lean against your home and cause damage, and a tree too close to your home can cause cause a fire to stair-step to your house. Stair-stepping is when you plant a series of plants each layer getting taller. An example would be flowers and small bushes in the first ring, taller bushes in the next ring and trees in the final ring next to your home. This makes it easy for a fire to crawl up the layers and to your house.
Bushes should not ring your house for safety reasons. They permit buglers and other criminals to assess your home without being seen. The bushes hide them. Don't plant bushes under windows.

If you are planning to transplant an evergreen, do so before it reaches four feet.
You can add just a little compost to the hole, but be very careful fertilizing evergreens.
Put away the top soil and the potting soil-they won't thank you if you use it.
Review projected height and width. Planting it near power lines will mean it's removal later if it grows into them. Watch planting near the curb. Several people in my town where very unhappy when their evergreen's lower branches where removed because they where obstructing the view of motorist.

As a general rule, trees should be transplanted no deeper than the soil in which they were originally grown. The width of the hole should be at least 3 times the diameter of the root ball or container or the spread of the roots in the case of bare root trees.
