Ammending your soil is a must. Check with your garden center or local extension agent for recommendations. I always add a healthy layer of compost and a light sprinkle of slow release fertilizer to my ammendments.

Be very careful with your ammendments! I was sprinkling lime and bonemeal around without thought to the soil type. My soil is from limestone so it already has too much lime and calcium. The last thing my plants needed was for me to add more. This warning includes all items you add for example I saw a recommendation for dog-food on flowering plants however after a little research I discovered the key ingredient was calcium.
