Mirrors Because they reflect, they make a space look bigger. Place so they reflect either a scene from outside, a hallway, another mirror or the longest side of the room. Reflecting a solid painted wall will do little to open spaces. Use mirrors on room screens placed in corners, scones on the walls, and as a framed wall hanging.
Glass or Lucite Because they let light travel through they give the illusion of openness. Use glass for tabletops, lamp bases, and vases.
Fabric Textured or solid. Avoid prints.
Windows Raise curtain bar to just below ceiling to give illusion of height. Use solid fabric.
Lamps Consider floor lamps that can tuck behind chairs. Gives illusion of depth. Use solid shades. Consider silver or glass for tabletop lamp bases.
Rugs Use one big rug. Several small ones will cut up the space making it look smaller.
Furniture Use solid or textured fabric. Avoid large pieces. Use a love seat rather than a sofa. Use end-tables with legs rather than solid bases.
Accessories Use see-through or shiny accessories e.g. silver. Shiny accessories will bounce the light giving illusion of an open airy space.
