With the return of fall, it is time to put the garden and lawn items away.
The first step of organizing the garage is to sort what is to be stored into zones-toys, garden tools, car-care products, tools, pool supplies, sports equipment, etc.
Storage:
Tall items:
Tall items like fishing poles, rakes, bats, or garden shovels can be stored in a garbage can or you can attach wooden slats or bungee cords across a stud opening.
Frequently used items:
Store items you use frequently in clear plastic boxes.
Medium to small tools:
Attach chicken wire or peg-board to the studs. Insert hooks and hang items.
Odd/end supplies:
Clear hanging shoe bag.
Hang items:
Hang as many items as you can-fertilizer spreader, garden hose, shovels, bikes, lawn chairs.
Sandpaper:
Clip to a clip board and hang.
Saw blades:
Clamp end of blades in a clamp-on pant hanger. Hang on the wall.
Screws, nuts and nails:
Nail the lid of a jar to the bottom of a shelf. Fill the jar with items and screw onto the lid.
Balls:
Store balls and other small outdoor toys in a laundry bag. Hang on the wall.
Nice things:
-Paint a counter top or window shade with black-board paint. Nice for writing measurements.
-Attach a tennis ball from the ceiling to indicate where the car is to stop. When the ball touches the windshield the car is far enough into the garage.
-Attach a slow-moving sign to the back wall of your garage. Helps with aiming the car in a dark garage.
-Paint a boundary line around the car. Remind family not to leave toys, bikes or lawn mowers in the space.
-Place a shallow kitty-litter pan on the floor below your car engine to catch any drips.
-Keep a bucket of sand and oil mix in the garage. Insert garden tools in after use to clean them.
-Paint tool handles red or lemon yellow. Makes them easier to find when left in the yard.
Clean-up:
To clean up oil stains sprinkle with clay-type kitty litter or dry cement and let set for a couple days. Then sweep away.
